Can you delete tweets for free?
Updated 2026-09-29 · Written by the TweetXDelete team
Yes, with limits. X lets you delete any of your own posts at any time at no cost, but only one by one: X says it does not provide a way to bulk delete posts. TweetXDelete, a Chrome extension, deletes in batches and includes your first 30 successful operations without payment. After that, it needs a one time licence. It is not free for unlimited use.
The free allowance in TweetXDelete is the first 30 successful operations, one shared allowance across posts, likes and reposts together. It is not 30 of each. Deleting a reply counts as a post operation. For a larger cleanup you need a licence; see current pricing.
What X lets you do for free
Deleting your own posts on X costs nothing. To delete one post:
- Locate the post on X.
- Click the More icon at the top of the post.
- Click Delete.
To remove a like, click the selected heart again. Removing a like does not delete the original post.
This works well for a handful of posts. For hundreds or thousands, each one has to be found and deleted by hand, because X has no bulk option. You can also only delete your own posts, not posts from other accounts.
If you want a fresh start without losing your username, X suggests another route: create another account with a temporary username, then switch usernames.
What TweetXDelete includes without payment
TweetXDelete runs inside your existing, logged in X session on desktop Chrome. It never asks for your X password, and there is no signup or account linking. There is no mobile app and no web service.
Your first 30 successful operations are included. They come from one shared allowance, so deleting 20 posts and removing 10 likes uses all 30. Deleting a reply counts as a post operation. That is enough to try the panel on a small part of your history and see how it behaves on your account.
The What to delete options are Posts and replies, Reposts, Likes and Everything: posts and replies, then reposts, then likes. There is no mode for replies only and no keyword filter.
Start with a small run
- Install TweetXDelete for Chrome and make sure you are logged in to the X account you want to clean. Click the extension icon, then Open X and show the panel.
- Read the panel warning: Deletion is permanent. No undo, here or on X. Download your data archive first if any of it matters.
- Under What to delete, select Posts and replies.
- Open Advanced options. Set Stop after to 3. It counts from your oldest items. Leave Pace on Careful (recommended) and keep Keep the last 7 days checked.
- Click Scan my account. The scan reads your posts, then your replies, roughly your newest 3,200 items.
- Click Start deleting. Check the account, the action and the count in the confirmation before you continue.
If all three deletions succeed, this trial uses 3 of your 30 included operations.
Check the result
Wait for FINISHED in the log. Then open your profile on X and look for the oldest posts, or open the Replies tab if the trial included replies. You can also search X for from:yourhandle.
A finished run does not prove that every item is gone. If the log shows Note: X did not fully answer the replies request. Posts are complete; replies may be missing or incomplete., run the scan again later.
Use Stop to halt a job and wait for STOPPED in the log. Use Resume where it stopped to continue it. The extension runs only while the X tab is open; there is no scheduler.
When the free allowance runs out
After the first 30 successful operations, TweetXDelete needs a one time licence. It is not a subscription. The price may change, so check the pricing section for the current terms.
The free route on X itself stays open: delete the remaining posts one by one, and remove likes by clicking the heart again.
With a licence, large jobs can take hours. Requests are spaced out and the extension waits when X signals a rate limit, so there is no guaranteed completion time, and no guarantee that X will never restrict an account.
Other tools that offer free deletion
This guide does not describe the plans or limits of other tools. For a side by side look at the options, read the comparison of tweet deleter tools. If you used TweetDelete before, the TweetDelete alternative guide covers the switch. For a full cleanup, see how to delete all your tweets.
Before you delete anything
Deletion is permanent, and TweetXDelete cannot restore deleted posts. Download your archive first from Settings, Your account, Download an archive of your data. X says preparation can take a few days.
The archive also reaches older history. Load archive file (full history) reads the extracted tweets.js, and Load like.js from your archive (older likes) reads older likes when Likes is selected. Only IDs and dates are read, on your device, and the file is not uploaded. Your archive, post content, password and cookies are not sent to TweetXDelete servers.
Deleting has limits too. X removes a deleted post from your account, from the timelines of accounts that follow you and from X search results, along with reposts of it. Quote posts and copies other people pasted into their own posts stay. X also cannot remove copies cached or cross posted on third party websites, apps or search engines.
